Hope It Was Merry

I had a great Christmas, complete with turkey and all the trimmings. There were many knitting books under the tree! I can’t wait to get going on some of the projects. The favourite of the moment is Cat Bordhi’s “New Pathways for Sock Knitters”. It’s amazing, it’s new and invigorating and I can’t believe that I have missed out on so many other ways to knit socks.

I think I might use this for my first pair:

Toxic - for socks

It’s a three ply dk weight of superwash corriedale. I really enjoyed spinning up the “Toxic” November selection for Hello Yarn. The roving was in two 4 oz. bags, which I split in three length ways and then tried to spin to keep the colour runs consistent. During the plying it only kinda worked, with two colours usually being the same and a third one not quite matching up. However, I still really like it and there are some gradual stripes that may knit up with this yarn. I can’t wait to get going, but I am not starting a new pair of socks until the new year. Oddly, this picture looks NOTHING like the yarn. I couldn’t get it right, will try again for you soon.

Now I know I said that I wanted to finish the cami and the wrap. And I also said that I would not be knitting or spinning on anything new until those were done. But it struck me that they were boring, which is why they were languishing there in the first place, and the last thing I want to do is be bored during the holidays. So I had to do other things. I didn’t just cheat with the above yarn, I cheated with everything I did over Christmas.

Pie

This is the “Pi for Everyone” colourway from Spunky Eclectic. I really did not like it while it was roving, but enjoy how the yarn came out. I am still only “meh” on the amount of pink in this yarn but I do think it will be used. I have only one more month’s selection from her, and then my subscription will end. The small amounts of this and that are just killing me, I have enough from my Rhinebeck purchases that I need to get to.

And, I have worked more on the second take of the “Road to Golden” sweater. My sister is waiting to get the shrunken one in the mail (the post can really take a long time and I admittedly mailed it too late to make it there for Christmas). This version is slightly different in that I am adding some side shaping that was desperately needed for my chest to rib-cage transition, and I have switched the hand that holds the foreground and background colours.

Sorry for the crap pic, it was taken at night.

Road to Teal and Grey, v2

The hand switch is more important that I would have thought. Before I had my right (tighter) hand holding the light background colours, and my left “looser” hand holding the darker foreground colours. The lighter colours looked a lot more “pulled” in my other version and I find the dark colours to not be as obvious in this. So I am liking this more, even though I generally do prefer the “foreground” to be more dominant.

Here’s a good question. How do you determine what is the foreground and what is the background of a coloured pattern? I don’t know if I do it properly and would like to hear your thoughts on this.

I hope you all had a great holiday season! We still have New Years to go, which will be another four-day weekend for me. Exciting! I might swing by Seed Stitch with the remainder of my day and see if they are open. The stash diet has been going really well but a girl deserves a treat every now and then, doesn’t she?

Do you read Techknitter? She has several posts about two-color knitting that discuss dominant colors, etc. It’s http://www.techknitting.blogspot.com, and she’s on Ravelry too.

Nice spinning! I hear ya, the little bits and pieces of my fiber club acquisitions are fun, but unless I find something to pair them with, there’s not enough to really make something.
