I Swapped!

The stash swap this past weekend was a lot of fun. It was well organized, full of cool people and actually worthwhile. The way they organized it seemed to work well. You bring in stuff you don’t want, they assign you “yarn bucks” based on pre-determined criteria and the quality/quantity of what you brought in, then you spend your amount of yarn bucks on the stuff that other people brought. I brought in a lot of yarn that I had up for sale or trade on Ravelry and came away with a lot of good stuff in return. I didn’t bring my camera, but I took some pics with my phone for you (you gotta have some sort of eye candy!).

They collected all the items as people came in and put them in large piles:

The books went to one table:

And the yarn was dumped into little “areas” where we got to root through it all:

It wasn’t really a free-for-all, everyone was very respectful and I think that everyone came away with nice stuff. Another cool thing is that all the yarn that was left at the end went to charity.

So what did I score? Awesome books:

Some nice yarns (I got more than what I am showing, but I am trying to not overwhelm you with images):

Yarn Stash - GGH Aspen

Yarn Stash - Inca Alpaca Print

And my favourite (and something I was stalking the piles for because I saw it get brought it for trades):

Yarn Stash - Noro

Ten hanks. Pretty much for free. I can not believe how stoked I was to see this there. It’s the more of the Ganpi Abaka, but this time in all black. I think I am going to crochet something structural, like a funky vase of something, for my new apartment. I won’t need to do this anytime soon as I won’t be moving out on my own for a bit yet, but it’s still something to look forward to!

All in all, I would say that every city should organize one of these swaps. What a great time it was and I feel like I not only cleared out yarns I no longer wanted, but I also got great items in return!

You’re so lucky! I was sorely disappointed in our guild’s fiber swap this year. It was my first time to participate and I should’ve taken a hint when older members didn’t. I lost quite a bit of good fiber (10 skeins of Debbie Bliss, good sock yarn, blended batts) and came away with very little. They counted 10 skeins as 1 item! Some people brought in total crap - acrylic and weaving cotton on cones.

Sorry to vent! I’m glad your swap was better organized and fair!
