The free patterns are old and date back to when my website was called “Retvrang”. Some of them have been allowed to “survive” and have made their way over to Knitfreak – and they are still free. On “Retvrang” they were not always my own designs, so the free patterns may contain links and references to other sites. This pattern is free – add it to cart and complete the purchase .

If you have leftover yarn, here’s a great way to put it to good use. I crocheted this cute bag from yarn scraps that are tied together. For more information and instructions on how to make it, download the recipe.

Free pattern – Crochet bag

Inspiration from the web

I surfed the web to get some new ideas. I found this website that gives you great guidance on how to create the yarn. Click here for more info: http://cupcakebyme.blogspot.dk/2014/08/upcycling-garnrester-hklet-pung.html. And I have to thank my lovely friend Conny for the idea too – she’s an inventive and brilliant girl.

Preparing the yarn

When I started, I made different lengths of yarn/colors. My rules were that the length of my yarn pieces should be between 20-50 cm long. In addition, the rule was that when I tied the yarn together, there could not be two of the same color after each other. I put all the pieces of yarn in a bag and then fished them out randomly – one by one – and tied them together.

Yarn selection

The yarn I’ve used is regular 8/4 cotton, but any yarn will work – as long as it matches in thickness and needle size. It’s important to choose yarns that match in thickness so that the finished product has a uniform texture and appearance. If you have scraps of different types of yarn, you can also experiment with combining them to create unique textures and color patterns.

Crocheting the bag

My bag is made as follows: cast on 120 ch (or the number of stitches you want for the width of your bag). Join into a ring with a chain stitch. Then work double crochets in a spiral (120 per round) until the bag is the desired height. Make sure that the knots you have tied are always on the back of your work. Practice makes perfect, it can be done. And if you run out of yarn, you can always make some more. It’s a good idea to have an extra roll of yarn on hand so you don’t run out mid-project.

Finishing and assembly

Once the bag has reached the desired height, you can start thinking about the finish. Finally, I sewed an inner bag (mine has pockets, but it’s a matter of taste) to hide the many knots. I attached a zipper between the inner bag and the crocheted bag. The sewing machine was able to do that just fine. On the sides are two pieces of skin/leather that are sewn on by hand. A leather cord is then attached so that the bag can sit on the shoulder. There are so many great finishes, handles and variations – so you can do as you please and maybe find an idea or two in your stash. An old handle from another bag might also be useful.

Extra tips and tricks

When sewing the inner bag, you can choose to add pockets or other practical details to make the bag more functional. A zipper is a good solution to ensure your belongings stay in the bag, but you can also experiment with other closures like buttons or magnetic snaps. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can sew the inner bag by hand with small, tight stitches to ensure it holds well.

When it comes to attaching the skin or leather pieces, you can choose to use a heavy-duty needle and thread designed for leatherwork. This ensures that the pieces are firmly attached and can withstand daily use. The leather cord can be adjusted in length so the bag fits perfectly on your shoulder or can be worn as a crossbody bag.

Closing thoughts

Now you’ve got the idea, it’s just a matter of getting started – enjoy your work. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the process. Crafting is a great way to relax and create something unique with your own hands. So get out your leftover yarn and let your creativity run wild. Have a great time!
