That is, if you have a diameter of 17 cm, the math works out:

3.1415 x 17 = 53.4 cm….this means that the circumference of the hat is 53.4 cm. Then you can play around with making the circumference bigger or smaller. A hat doesn’t have to be too loose – so if you have a head circumference of 53 cm, crochet the hat a little bit smaller….. so it sits fairly firmly on your head. Try on your hat as you crochet and see if you are satisfied.
