This cute “Remningen” sweater is available in sizes 3 months to 5-6 years. It is a lovely warm and soft sweater knitted in Extrafine Merino yarn – Drops.
It’s a great opportunity to use your yarn leftovers! You can play with colors and color combinations – and use the last yarn from the drawers.
The sweater is knitted from the top down and has a cute little rolled edge / ribbed edge as a finish in the neck, sleeves and body. It is knitted with a raised neck using the technique “german short rows”. There are raglan increases on the sleeves, which makes it well-fitting.
There is good freedom of movement in the sweater – it works well for both a nap in the pram, play on the playground – or under the jacket on cold days. Wool has the formidable property that it warms on cold days and regulates temperature on warmer days. With wool on the body, your child is always well dressed.
There is a minimum of mounting on the sweater. Yarn ends must be attached after each color change – but otherwise not much assembly.
Size: 3 months (6 months) 9 months (1 year) 2 years (3 years) 4 years (5-6 years)
Yarn: Extrafine Merino – from Drops
Yarn required: 3 (4) 4-5 (5) 5 (5) 6 (7) skeins of Extrafine Merino a 50 grams.
Running length of 50 grams = 105 meters.
You put together your own color combinations – the number of whole skeins. If you don’t have whole skeins, you can weigh the yarn so you know you have enough.

If the gauge doesn’t fit, try thicker or thinner needles. It is important that the knitting tension fits so that your work gets the right size with the right measurements.

You can choose to knit with double pointed needles at the beginning at the neck and on the sleeves. Alternatively, you can use the “magic loop” technique if you are familiar with it. There are many nice videos on the internet.
Switch to a longer circular needle if you need it along the way – and as you get more and more stitches on the yoke.

Remningen sweater. Offer up the yarn scraps for dancing with a colorful sweater for kids
Do you also have a drawer, a bag or maybe an entire closet that is about to explode with colorful yarn genes? Those small, adorable skeins that were far too nice to throw away, but are just too small for a real project. You are not alone. It is the yarn trap, and many of us sit in it with a smile on our faces.
But what if your forgotten treasures could turn into the coolest piece of clothing in your child’s wardrobe? This is exactly where a colourful sweater for children comes into the picture. Specifically, the design ‘The Remnant’, which does away with yarn waste in the most stylish way possible.
What is the story behind the Remnant sweater?
The name almost goes without saying, doesn’t it? The ‘Remnant’ is born from the idea of using what we already have. At a time when sustainability, DIY and recycling are taking up more and more space in our everyday lives, it simply makes no sense to let delicious yarn go to waste.
When you start knitting this sweater for kids, you don’t just create a warming layer for the little ones in the family. You create a completely unique piece of children’s fashion that no one else in kindergarten or school has equaled. It’s the ultimate leftover project, where you let chance and your own creativity determine the color scheme.
No more boring, factory-made sweaters in neutral colours. With this sweater for kids, you let the colours explode in a unique pattern that brings smiles to both young and old.
Perfect for those who love sustainable DIY
If you have a weakness for DIY projects, you probably know the feeling of wanting to create something that both looks good and makes sense for the environment. Fashions change quickly, but a hand-knitted sweater for kids never goes out of style. And when it’s made from yarn scraps, it matches the green agenda perfectly.
The genius of the concept is that you can mix qualities and shades exactly as you wish. Do you have a bit of soft merino lying around from a sweater for yourself, and a few meters of wool from a hat for grandma? Mix it up. It gives a wonderful texture and a very special look.
For families with children, sustainability is often something that takes up space in everyday life. Children grow like weeds, and it can feel insurmountable to constantly buy new ones. By knitting a personalized sweater for children from what you already have in your stash, you save both your wallet and the environment from unnecessary strain. And then it’s just extra fun to answer: “I made it myself from old leftovers” when people praise the sweater.
Can beginners join the Relningen sweater?
Maybe as a new knitter, you sit and think that a leftover project sounds incredibly complicated. How do you control ten different colors without going completely cold in threads and joints? The truth is that it’s far easier than it looks.
This sweater for kids is constructed in a way that everyone can join. You don’t have to be a seasoned expert with twenty years of experience to get a great result. It’s basically about sticking with stockinette stitch and letting the yarn’s own shifts do the work for you.
Why the project is great for you who are new:
-
You will learn to see through color combinations without having to invest a fortune in new yarn.
-
The fit is classic and uncomplicated, so you won’t lose heart along the way.
-
It’s a manageable project because, all other things being equal, children’s sizes go faster than adult sweaters.
Why the experienced knitter will love it too:
-
You get to clean up your warehouse thoroughly in a fun way.
-
You can experiment with fun yarn combinations and structures you wouldn’t normally use together.
-
It’s the perfect in-between project when you need a break from complicated patterns and just want to let your hands work freely.
Regardless of your level, the goal is the same: to create a fun and functional sweater for kids that the kids really want to wear.
How to get started with the Remningen sweater project
The first step is to get an overview of your yarn scraps. Empty the bags onto the living room table and start sorting. You can choose to go for a specific color theme – for example, cold blue and green shades, or warm pink and yellow tones. You can also just close your eyes and grab the next skein in the row for a completely random and exuberant look.
Once you’ve found your style, all you need is the right pattern for the purpose. A well-thought-out pattern is your best friend when you need to keep track of stitch counts, increases and assembly, no matter how wild your colouring gets.
The good thing about choosing a well-thought-out pattern for children’s clothes is that the fit has been tested through. Children rarely sit still. They climb trees, roll around on the grass and build caves under the dining table. That’s why a sweater for children must be able to withstand being used and moved in. ‘The remainder’ is designed with spaciousness, so the child can easily run around without feeling squeezed.
Make your knitting your own creative playground
The beauty of needlework is that there are no rules that can’t be bent a little. When you start creating a sweater for kids, you’re the designer.
Do you think the sleeves should each have their own colour? Do it. Should the ribbing be bright yellow even though the rest of the sweater is muted? Why not. Kids love things that stand out, and they’re sure to love having a hand in choosing the colours. You can even let your child pick out the next skeins from your pile of yarn scraps so they feel part of the creative process.
There’s something deeply satisfying about seeing a finished stuffed animal or piece of clothing grow in your hands. And the joy is only greater when you know that yarn scraps from previous projects have been given a new, colorful life instead of gathering dust in oblivion.
Are you ready to let the sticks glow?
If you’re ready to give your yarn stash a well-deserved overhaul and at the same time create something completely unique for a dear child in your life, it’s just a matter of getting started. Get out your needles, pour the contents of your yarn basket onto the table, and get ready for one of the most entertaining DIY projects in a long time.
Whether you want to make a cool sweater for kids for everyday life in kindergarten or a warm case for the cold weekends in the cottage, ‘Levningen’ is the obvious choice. It’s fun, it’s sustainable, and it’s the perfect excuse to geek out with your favorite colors.
